The Tretyakov Museum

The Art Gallery to visit in Moscow is the Tertyakov Museum. Originally a private collection it is now a repository of all major Russian masterpieces. Visitng the gallery provides the opportunity to see samples of all major Russian artists through the ages and, sadly, to realize that these artists are not represented in Western galleries.

To provide a taste for the best of Russian art I offer twenty-four examples, principally from the Tretyakov Museum as well as a separate room for another twelve of Isaak Levitan's paintings..

For Quicktime users.

Here first is a Quicktime movie clip showing a painting from the Tretyakov as a viewer might focus on different parts of it with the sound of visitors in the background.

The name of the painter was not recorded.

Click on the film to the right to stop and start it.

Isaak Levitan's paintings deserve a separate Levitan Room
