Frederic Leighton

1830 - 1896

Flaming June

This painting once didn't reach it's reserve price of $140 in an auction in the 1960s, it was thought, because it was too old fashioned. The founder of the Museo de Arte de Ponce found it in Amsterdam where he bought it for $10,000. It is now exhibited in the Museo in Puerto Rico.

The oleander branch symbolizes the closeness of sleep and death.
