Toulouse-Lautrec

The Toilet

Henri-Marie-Raymond de Toulouse-Lautrec was of an autocratic family and lived from 1864 to 1901. He was a cripple, having broken his legs many times, it is said because of weak bones brought about by the incest in his noble family. He haunted the brothels and nightclubs of Paris for his paintings. His favorite nightclub was the Moulin Rouge (below).

As a painter he is credited for copying and adapting the Japanese method of outlining characters, and his style was in turn copied and adapted by Egon Schiele, in Vienna.
