Giovanni Bellini
The Feast of the Gods
|
This painting is the subject of much analysis since it was first painted by Giovanni Bellini in 1512. D.C. Dosso painted over much of it in 1522, and it was repainted by Titian in 1529. (See the three paintings on one page) Titian made great changes in the background. So the figures are Bellini's, the bird in the tree is by Dosso, and the background, particularly on the left is by Titian. How was this all analysed? … by X-ray, infrared photography and my a detailed analysis of the cross-section of the paint over the canvas. An excellent site shows how it is done by giving you the chance to roam across the painting with an X-ray or an Infrared glass. Be sure to return by go now to the site at WebExhibits. The analysis was performed at the National Gallery of Art, Washington. Particularly investigate the Analysis and Deconstruction tabs ub the WebExhibit. |
