Schiele painted a great number of landscape and figure groups. Each was an outline in the manner of the Japanese paintings of Hiroshige and Hokusai but sometimes he went further by outlining them once more in color. Here the outlines are frames for color. |
Scheile was the master of pen-and-ink drawing both in his curious erotic figures as well as in the natural style shown by the woman below. He needed only to draw a partial figure and then add tiny sections of color to make it a masterpiece of vision. His compositions were wonderful and he did not need to copy any other (as Manet did earlier.) |
