Joshua Reynolds

(1723-1788)

Sir Joshua is celebrated in the Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg by four paintings, the finest of which is the one shown here.

Cupid Untying the Girdle of Venus

"This is one of the artist's own replicas on a popular subect of the day, but the figures in the paintings are far removed from the Classical idela. Venus isan entirely real, flesh-and-blook English beauty, with a rosy complexion and red hair looking out coquettishly at the viewer in veigned bewilderment at the dangerous game being played by the naughty urchin Cupid."
