El Prado
El Prado is Madrid's art gallery and one of the finest in the world. While it naturally specializes in Spanish painting it also has a good collection of Western European art. I visited in 1975 and one painting struck my fancy. I bought one of the new reproductions in which even brush strokes are reproduced. When I unrolled it next to the original I had difficulty in seeing any difference other than that the reproduction was mine. The painting alone makes me want to return to Madrid. |

The ' Snow Scene' was painted by Peter Brueghel the Younger. It is a copy of his father's original creation in 1565. Pieter the Younger was a member of his father's workshop where his father's paintings were regularly copied for sale. Pieter was an excellent painter in his own right but he never received training from his father who died in 1569 while he and his brother were small children. Nevertheless, he clearly admired his father's painting judging from how many of them he copied for sale. The original of this painting is in Brussels. |
