| Apart from being a reclining nude which even in the late 19th Century was still daring subject matter, this painting showed two reclining nudes in a posture that suggests that the two women were falling asleep having made lesbian love. That counted dpubly against this painting so it was not publicly shown despite is classic pose. Courbet also painted "The Origin of the World" at the same time.
